I bought an iPhone on Wednesday night and by Friday morning it had been delivered.  I’ve been playing a little and downloading some apps, but feel like I am letting the side down with my 7 apps.  Can you recommend any?

Update: allrecipe.com.au has an awesome dinner spinner app. I’ve wasted many hours already spinning dinners!

Today consisted of work and the consumption of chocolate and ice cream in an attempt to trick myself that the day was going well. I failed in that respect.  My most productive hour was 5 - 6pm.

It’s rained nearly all day today, together with gale force winds (gusts up to 110km per hour around Melbourne).  Save for the coffee run, I’ve spent most of the day on the couch by the window getting in touch with hits from 1990’s.  Water storage as at today are 27.6% up .2% since 12 August 2009.

I can’t believe how quickly time has flown. In January 2010 Ella will be 10 years old. She doesn’t look and doesn’t act as if she is nearly 10, more like 3 or 4, fully of energy, ready to pounce at any given moment. Ella has become really jealous of my attention to the other dogs. This has on several occasions nearly escalated into a bitch fight between Ella and Leila (6 years old). Unfortunately, when we move out we wont be able to take Ella with us, although that is my dream, Ella would not cope with apartment living.  Life without a dog will take some major adjustment. We will eventually have one when we buy a house but the intervening years will be hard.

Rain! Rain! Come again!

Ahhh. Winters in Melbourne.  Beautiful brisk mornings … or as T puts it ‘nippily’, sometimes with the winter sun, then turning into bitterly cold afternoons and nights, and other times just gale force winds. Over the past few years, not much rain, but lots of wind.

The other day I had to go to the bank, checked out the window at the office and it looked fantastic, sun was shining little to no wind, clearly no need for an umbrella.  When I walked out of the bank it was dark and gloomy.  Everything went quiet, and that sense of something bad about to happen made just about everyone stop and wait for a moment. A that point I was just about to step out from underneath the shelter and it starts bucketing down and hailing for about 2 minutes.   Nothing else to do but wait it out (I was dressed rather inappropriately to venture into the rain (white shirt)) so stood there fiddling with my phone.  This was taken at 2.30 pm and it was so dark outside if i didn’t have a watch I would have thought it was about 5.30 pm.

Rain

When I walked past the bus shelter there were 5 old ladies crammed in with their walking frames trying to escape the rain. The bus shelter failed them.

Melbourne water storages are at 27.4% capacity. I’ve been doing a bit of reading about our storage levels and water saving in general and stumbled across this graph.  What happened in 2006? We used so much the capacity dropped 20%. As you can see the winter rainfall for 2009 has not been great and I wouldn’t be surprised if by January 2010 we’re at 25% capacity or less.  There is another review of the water restrictions in November this year and the government will decide if they will bump it to Stage 4 restrictions (which were meant to be triggered at 29.3%), they have refused to go to Stage 4 all year.  Instead they decided to pipe water, which really doesn’t exist, from the north of the State to the south (so that us in the big smoke have some water) through a big massive and costly pipe ($750 million for 70km of pipe!).  Great work! I see lots of politicians spending late nights over that one. That idea is right up there with the idea of the pipe from Queensland to Victoria. That’s the end of my water rant.

A friend shared this with me, and I think you’ll enjoy it as much as I did.

House-mania

We’ve been looking for apartments to buy for sometime now, and I’ll admit, it’s not been easy.  At the beginning we wrote a list of Must Have’s in the apartment, nothing fancy, just mostly, laundry facilities (ie not communal) and two bedrooms.  Not an exhaustive list, and I thought this would be an easy task.

Once we started looking, I was truly amazed at how many places didn’t have even taps in the bathroom (or anywhere) for a washing machine.  The stats would be somewhere around the 75% mark.  What is even more mind boggling is that even newer apartments built not less than 5 years ago DON’T EVEN HAVE LAUNDRY FACILITIES.  Is that even legal? Do people think that we just want to pay to have someone come and take our washing away, or we want to spend our lonely weekends hanging out at the laundromat knitting and watching little kids scream whilst you baby sit your washing? Just seems odd. Hopefully we will stumble across something good. We’re nearing 6 months for apartment looking and much longer if you include the months where were thought we might want a house in the middle of nowhere.

Managed to survive the wedding madness (not mine, brother’s). My feet are still complaining about 15 hours + in heels which were one size to small. Blisters everywhere, and all last week was like I was walking on broken glass.  What women do for fashion.

Anyhow, the wedding gave me a few great ideas about my own wedding.  No dates set yet though.  I need to recover from the lack of sleep from the first one.

S & T 1 August 2009

After a long 24 hours of drinking and dancing, at the end of the night i still managed to look half respectable.

Good luck Jac on your nuptials!

Gimme Gimme More…

Dear Internets. I have sinned against you and beg your forgiveness.

On 29 June 2009 I downloaded and paid for six (6) Britney Spears songs, namely:

  • Womanizer;
  • Gimme More;
  • Circus;
  • If U Seek Amy;
  • Toxic;
  • Piece of Me.

Worst of all Internets, I enjoy listening to them.  Their use is limited strictly to my nightly exercise, be it cycling, running or walking.  They all have a good beat and encourage me to keep a good pace. I LIKE BRITNEY SPEARS (albeit in a very limited fashion).

I have rekindled my love for trashy 90’s music. Hello Vanilla Ice. Hello MC Hammer. Stop! Collaborate and Listen! Can you rock the mic like a vandal? huh? Can you? Vanilla Ice can baby. To the extreme!

In other news.  There is something secretly satisfying about a guy slowing down his car to stare and gawk when I’m out for a jog.

the path to becoming a skinflint…

Perhaps I am becoming a penny pincher in my old age, or working in an office with Jewish coworkers and for Jewish clients is rubbing off on me.

I booked tickets to go see the new Ice Age movie tonight, as a dinner-movie-date with my man.  All good, totally looking forward to it.  Great thing these days is you can avoid the line by booking online, which also means the cinema companies don’t have to employ some pimply 15 year old to hand out tickets.  So I book online. I remember tickets being somewhere in the region of $15.00, but apparently not, I got slugged $20 per ticket (adult) to see a children’s film.  NOT ONLY THAT - they charged me a $2.00 booking fee.

That’s $2.00 for the pleasure of them not having to employ someone at $10 per hour for a 5 second automated process where I am not even required to pick up tickets from an office box.  I feel honoured, Village Cinemas, that you would allow me to purchase tickets online and view movies at your prestigious cinemas with the extra popcorn and gum you provide for free on the floors of the theatre.

I remember when they used to be a lot cheaper, even on tightass tuesdays. What the hell has happened to seeing a movie. This, I think, will be the last time we see a movie at the cinemas … at least until we get cable tv.

The world is over.

At least the part of the world that involved awesome fish & chips and gyros.

It’s taken years to find a good greek run fish and chip shop. For some reason the greeks do an awesome job cooking food. food is their life. The business was sold and the product is now just not the same. I’m sure the method is the same but the love is not there.  The food is somewhat sloppy and things are just not cooked to perfection.

Now the mission begins to find a new fish & chip shop.  With the purchase of a cardboard box imminent (hopefully), perhaps we should hold off on the search. I’m sure my hips/thighs/stomach/arteries will thank me in the short term.
