rain and creepy men

July 1st, 2009 § No Comments »

A bit of rain falls from the sky and something is triggered in peoples brains that makes them drive stupidly.  For example, I was coming around a corner (two lanes) which merges into one lane just around that corner, and TWO people decide to do suicide u-turns across the road when a lot of traffic was coming.  The other, I was waiting to turn right into a side street and there was a big gap coming up, there was a car turning left into that side street. Plenty of time for them to turn and me to turn.  The left turning car stops dead right before the corner and turns the corner as if it were a hairpin turn on the side of a cliff with only a 30cm shoulder. Needless to say that I missed the big gap.

I have no way of tying these two topics together, so I wont even bother… so on my jogging route I pass this house on a corner block.  There is always this guy standing in his kitchen watching me.  I’m not entirely sure if he is the full dollar or not, but he watches me for the ~50m as I approach the house, then when i get to crossing the street he pokes his head out, then when i am just about to run past the house, he runs into the front room and stands right at the window watching me.. almost like a puppy, but not as cute, nor as young.  This occurs every night. I’m sure others must have crazy people who watch them exercise.. I fear going past his place sometimes more than running through the park in total darkness.

The End of Financial Year has come and gone.  Yesterday it rained cats and dogs, was really windy, to the point where I was expecting to see some cows being swept away. Quite fitting really for the EOFY, maybe some investors are shaking in their boots looking for cash to pay for their greedy investing habits.  I just want a place to live. I need mums and dads to stop forking cash over to their useless Gen Y children, and the Government to take away the First Home Buyers Grant/Boost. I like reading the comments on news articles about the housing markets. Here are a couple of my favourites from this morning:

“Its like having a Tax grant for supporting the share market. Get rid of the FHBG and let the market find its equilibrium, which it eventually does anyway.”

“FHOG and the boost hasn’t helped First Home buyers. However they have helped the sellers get a better price for their properties. This is a classic case of “intentions not equating results” and probably doing more damage in what is still an over inflated bubble.”

Hopefully once things settle down in extra-life activities (weddings, work, other random things) we can go on a serious cardboard box hunt.  Nothing fancy, waterproof, some cut out windows, nothing fancy pants.

Yesterday was the $90,000,000.00 OzLotto draw.  Apparently one in every two adults in Australia purchased a ticket from this.  I ended up purchasing two, one for me and the work syndicate. Now before you all start sending me emails telling me how much of a good friend you are … i didn’t win the big one. Not  sure what division 2 - 7 were but there is a chance i got one of those. Knowing my luck it will be division 7 on the work syndicate, not even enough to cover a coffee.

I managed to budget myself $39 dollars for a week and a half. I was in a slight panic yesterday, until the money gods answered my prayers and i found $40 in my purse! And a doctors bill that i can claim $40 back on!  Now life is somewhat back to usual coffee in the mornings, so long as I don’t drive the care anywhere on the weekend, I should be good.

I also have this jingle stuck in my head. I have been singing it for days.. quite catchy!

Housewife of Y2K

In case you were worried, I survived the flu, and promptly gave it to T. I now spend my days making cups of double strength neocitran for him.  Working hard as always. Still on the hunt for a house.

It’s a shame that Y2K didn’t bring us this.

CWA Cookery & Household Hints

Head is pounding. Nose is like a running tap. Eyes sore and puffy. Uncontrollable sneezes that would blow down the 3 little pigs brick house. I feel like I have been left in the Canadian wilderness in the middle of winter wearing only my pajamas. Whilst I am fairly confident it is just a common flu/sinus evilness, part of me is thinking, what if I have swine flu.  Thanks to our wonderful health system, theoretically I should be able to visit my local bulk billing doctor and everything would be paid for by the my taxes, in theory.  In practice, in a 15km radius there are 4 bulk billing doctors surgeries, when called they only bulk bill for concession card holders and pensioners, neither of which are me.  I could go to the hospital, but hell, I’m not a pandemic flu psycho, and if I didn’t have it, I would almost be guaranteed to catch it there.  The only other alternative is to go see my regular GP, but at $65 for a 15 minute block, of which I spend 30 minutes waiting because she is running late and then 2 minutes in the actual consult room, I can’t justify the expense when I’m not even sure it is anything I should be worried about. I’ll give myself 24 hours to produce a cure, failing which I will weaken and pay to see a doctor, hopefully I can avoid time off work, since it’s hectic and I have exciting (important) things to do for the next two weeks.

In the meantime, I’ll continue with my Vicks VapoRub, Camomile Tea, a good book* and the never ending box of tissues.

* I have a weakness for books from 1950’s that are about etiquette and handy household cleaning tips.  Although I only have one, I would love to expand my collection but they’re hard to find.

foggy fridays

Thursday and Friday saw some serious fog around Melbourne. On Thursday the fog didn’t clear completely, Friday at least by mid afternoon it was blue skies.  Unfortunately, the photos don’t show just how bad it was.  But normally you can see all the way down this street, visibility on Friday morning was about 100m - 150m.  Obviously the athletics oval across the road is worse, I was tempted to go for a run but ran out of time.

Last night we went out to dinner to celebrate my Dad’s birthday.  The night brought back memories of my childhood in particular my love addiction for all things softdrink (pop/soda/fizzy for those non-austrlians).  My Dad used to buy a crate of softdrink from a company called Slades.  Back then the bottles were glass and had a kind of 80s look to them, and you could get great flavours like raspberry, creamy soda, and sarsparella.  So my Dad would buy some drinks for my brother and I to share, typically flavours like raspberry, orange, and passionfruit, but whatever amount he bought we would always drink it all before his next scheduled monthly purchase. Being desperate for my sugarhit I started to drink his drinks. These were things like sarsparella, mineral water and toxic tonic water. At that stage, anything with the word ‘water’ behind it was to be kept well away from me, as it was tasteless and contained no sugar. So I started to develop a good taste for sarsparella.  Dad obviously noticed his drink slowly disappearing, and cottoned on to my cunning plan, so he upped the ante and started to buy double sarsparella.  Admittedly, it took some time till I could stomach the taste, it was very strong, but within a few months I had acquired a good taste for it.  Eventually the product went bad and so we stopped purchasing it.  Since then, he rarely buys sarsparella, but knows I have a great dislike to mineral water and more specifically tonic water (seriously, I do not know how people drink that stuff).  Thankfully, I rarely drink soft drink these days and my water consumption is about 3 Litres every day.

Chocolate Chips and Raspberry Muffin

We’re off to visit friends tonight, which called for some baking. Much to T’s delight, because he always gets to taste test everything before it leaves the house.  Hopefully these Chocolate, Chocolate Chip & Raspberry muffins are a hit. (sorry about the poor photo.. the lighting is terrible today, and all was rushed)

I cannot think of a better way to end a chaotic work week than to catch up with friends (old and new) for a few drinks.  I had the opportunity to snap a few photos beforehand.

peak hour

So many people hate peak hour traffic. I must be odd because I enjoy driving, even in peak hour.  Radio up full blast, singing, chilling and doing whatever whilst we move at about 5 kmph.  Last night I had to drive further than my usual 7km stint.  It was about an 80km round trip, slow.  The only thing I hate currently is driving in peak hour in a manual car. Perhaps it’s just my incredible luck that I get stuck behind people who cannot hold a constant speed and cause me to constantly shift between 2 and 3 as we crawl forward, but i feel my automotive-driving friends have it easy.

On a totally unrelated note, I am not impressed with the Government’s Federal Budget. Why can’t we just let the property market tank? There is no need to prop it up with grants.
